LARGEST GIRDER USED FOR BUILDING CONSTRUCTION A 74-ton mild steel plate girder is to be incorporated into a development being built by Richard Costain (Construction) Limited for Hallmark Securities Ltd. at St. Martin's Lane, London, W.C.2. The girder, 19 ft. 6 ins. high by 77 ft. 6 ins. long is thought to be the largest used for building construction in this country. The girder is being transported from Hebburn, Co. Durham, to the site in two pieces, each 9 ft. 10 ins. deep by 77 ft. 6 ins. long and weighing 37 tons. The first section arrived on the evening of 24th October, 1965. The picture shows the girder on site waiting to be moved into position. Together with four 19 ft. high by 65 ft. 6 ins. long Vierendeel girders of high-yield steel, each weighing 62 tons, the girder will carry a six-storey reinforced concrete block of shops and offices over the auditorium of a Rank's basement cinema. The steelwork is by Somerfelds Ltd. with Vickers Ltd., Shipbuilding Group, and Carter Horseley (Engineers) Ltd. as sub-contractors. The Architects are R.
