National Museum of Denmark
Copenhagen, Denmark

The Little Shepherd Boy'. Carlo Dalgas (1821-51) painted this typical national romantic picture around 1840. The peasant son of the nation leans against a dolmen - a monument of his and the nation´s ancestors - wearing a soldier´s cap and reading an ABC. The past, present and future of the nation are thus symbolised in a single image.
