This painting arrived in the Uffizi in 1793 after an exchange with the Imperial Gallery of Vienna organised by the director of that time, Luigi Lanzi. Traditionally thought to be by Giorgione, Crowe and Cavalcaselle's attribution to Bellini in 1871 is now universally accepted. With its striking poetic charm, this is one of the most discused and fascinating of italian 15th century works thanks to its complex iconography filled with figures that are hard to identify and unclear cultural references.
