Wooden tray with bamboo handles made between 1700 and 1950. The entire surface is coated with black Japanese urushi lacquer and decorated using the maki-e technique, where a fine gold dust is applied to the still-fresh lacquer; the umemono technique, where pieces of lead and mother-of-pearl are inlaid; and nashiji, where fine gold dust is scattered on the final layer of lacquer before it dries so the black background can still be seen.
The tray's surface depicts a fishing net which has just caught various fish and crustaceans, which are pictured in detail as was usual for the style spearheaded by the painter Ōkyo Maruyama. The variety of species (carp, catfish, eels, small fish, crabs, shrimps, clams, sea snails, etc.) symbolizes abundance and richness.
