Robert Osburn served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 through 1961. He was a photographer’s mate on board the aircraft carrier Intrepid. His job was to document life and work on board the ship.

Osburn served on board for two of Intrepid’s Mediterranean cruises. Many of his photographs captured crew members exploring such sights as the French Alps, the Acropolis and the Dead Sea. This photograph depicts another sailor taking a photograph of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.
