• Title: Saint Ambrose
  • Date: around 1645
  • Physical Dimensions: w129 x h229 cm
  • Painter: Carlo Francesco Nuvolone
  • Description: Painted around 1645, this work was mentioned in the eighteenth and nineteenth century guides to the chapel dedicated to St. Ambrose in his basilica. It was then transferred to the Sacristy, and finally to the Museum of St. Ambrose. In its composition and in the attitude of the saint, the work reveals the influence of the Sant'Ambrogio del Cerano painting (1610, Milan, Pinacoteca Ambrosiana), while the luster of the fabrics, the free and loose brushstrokes show the influence of the Genoese school and of the paintings of Van Dyck.
