In the years around 1530, Moretto momentarily deviated
from Venetian experiences and from Romanino to regain possession of the
tradition of Lombardy and of Foppa, achieving results of great quality, as in
this canvas. Here, the figure of
St. Anthony emerges from the shadows through a beam of light that comes from
the side. Experiments with side lighting were of great interest to the artist
at this stage of his career.
