Woodcarved sculpture of Saint Anthony of Lisbon, the most popular saint in the history of Portugal, stands in the centre of the altar pediment. This multicoloured wooden sculpture features Saint Anthony dressed with the Franciscan habit. His left hand holds a missal or a bible on which the Child Jesus stands. His right hand holds a bunch of lilies, a symbol of the religious chastity. It is a truly representative sculpture of the late mannerist types common in Portugal.

  • Commission: The decoration of this chapel dates back to the first half of 17th century in what is known as the Mannerist style – classical, sober and balanced, influenced by the style of the main chapel. Although it was built and decorated around 1635, it was partly destroyed by the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. Thus it was later restored. So it reflects an hybrid composition, both the mannerist and late baroque of the 18th century, plus the restoration campaign in the 19th century.
