As the patron saint of those who faced sudden death, Saint Barbara had special significance for artillerymen. Statues of Saint Barbara were placed near the powder magazines. This sculpture shows Santa Barbara holding a tower with three openings, to symbolize the Holy Trinity, and a plan of salvation.
