The Franciscan Saint Bernardino stands in profile facing left. Behind him are two bishop's hats, alluding to his repeated refusal to accept that clerical office. In front of him is the IHSmonogram of Christ's name (derived from the Greek) surrounded by flamelike rays. At the end of a sermon, Bernardino would often display an image of this monogram.
