After imitating Christ by living a saintly life, Saint Francis prepares to imitate him in his suffering by receiving in his side, his hands and his feet the same stigmata, the wounds inflicted on Christ at his crucifixion. The day after this ordeal, both physically testing and spiritually fulfilling, Saint Francis wrote litanies expressing the plenitude of his bliss.
