Saint Gilles, cannon of the Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem General view

Created upon the request of the Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem to defend Rhodes, this cannon boasts extremely rich decoration. The tailpiece is ornamented with a crushed lion's head. The first reinforce has an amulet with the inscription Saint-Gilles and is topped with two heraldic shields in bevel form. The first bears the coat of arms of the Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem cavalry, and the second bears that of Charles Alleman de Rochechinard, Grand Prieur of Saint-Gilles. The letter L, signature of the founder, along with the date and place of manufacturing (1507, made in Lyon) can be found above the coats of arms. The barrage with trimmed sides is also decorated with fleur-de-lis and lions.
