Saint Gregory's Mass

16th Century

Museo Arocena

Museo Arocena
Torreón, Mexico

Christian tradition narrates that in the VII century, when Pope Gregory celebrated the Eucharist on Christmas in the Roman Basilica of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem; an acolyte doubted the presence of Christ in the consecrated host. This question unleashed a miracle: Christ resuscitated appeared together with the Arma Christi, along with the instruments of passion that are shown and represented in a mystical space.

Starting in the XII century, this topic was widely disseminated in Spain since the scene allowed for the full pictorial setting that was different from the habitual representations of other saints. In this case, the palette used and the presentation of the episode also shows the taste that had developed in the zone of Castile in the second half of the XVI century, where the Italian influence was deeply ingrained.
