The painting, which depicts the founder of the Somaschi Fathers order, had on the back the inscription "Ercole Graziani" and the date 1669 (now no longer visible after the re-lining of the canvas during the 1980s). The work is therefore to be attributed to Ercole Graziani from Bologna, homonym of the youngest and best-known painter.
