Lotto’s painting Saint Jerome Penitent in the Brukenthal Art Gallery carries multiple allegorical and symbolic charges. The central idea is the hermit’s struggle in his confrontation with demonic temptation (whose abode is the wilderness), and the believer’s hope in the possibility of redemption (symbolized by the crucifix). - Artist Biography: Considered an eccentric and undervalued in his life, Lorenzo Lotto was born in Venice and, during his career, mainly painted altars, religious subjects and portraits. Active during the High Renaissance, his unusual paintings, featuring distorted figures, anticipated what is traditionally considered to be the first phase of Mannerism in the 16th century. Information about his apprenticeship is spotty, but we know that the work of Bellini and the naturalism of Giorgione had influenced him. Lotto worked in Treviso, Rome, Bergamo, Venice and Ancona, his style undergoing major changes in time, developing a striking individuality that set him apart from his Venetian contemporaries that he is conventionally grouped with sometimes. Lotto was an artist with a unique personality, a vision that allowed him to create remarkable paintings, full of realism and empathy, presenting a precise, distinct line and lively colouring. Especially noteworthy in his art is the intensity of his charter portrayal, his portraits being considered among the most lively in the art of Renaissance. ©Dana Roxana Hrib, European Art Gallery Guidebook, Second edition, Sibiu 2011.
