Saint John the Baptist

Moretto da BresciaBetween 1542 and 1545

Sforzesco Castle

Sforzesco Castle
Milan, Italy

The panel was one of the side compartments of the altarpiece of the chapel of the Sacrament in Sant’Agata, Brescia. The statuary grandeur of the figures is here softened by the tone of sorrowful meditation on the Eucharistic mystery to which the cartouches allude, referring to the sacrifice of the lamb. The colour range is based on greys, which are matched by pinks, ochres and greens, and the exaltation of muscular forms shows the influence of Roman Mannerism.
