The martyr Lawrence was a deacon under Pope Sixtus II, and distributed all the church’s treasures among the poor after the pope’s death. When the emperor demanded the treasures for himself, Lawrence presented the population, who by then had been baptised as Christians, as the true treasures of heaven. For his disobedience Lawrence was martyred on a gridiron.
