Saint Louis of Toulouse

Cristoforo Caselli

Collezione Fondazione Cariparma

Collezione Fondazione Cariparma
Parma, Italy

It's probably a panel of the central compartment of a polyptych. The table portrays a full-length holy Bishop, with his head slightly turned to the left and a precious miter. Above the chasuble he wears a large damask cape with fringes on the lower edge and embroided figures of saints. He also has a precious gold necklace with dark blue stonest. The bishop, St. Louis of Toulouse, holds in his right hand a book covered in red leather with central and corner studs, while he carries the crosier with his left hand. At his feet, on a pink marble floor, there are a royal crown in gold and precious stones. Loius of Toulouse was the second son of Charles II of Anjou, king of Sicily, but he renounced the right of birthright and the kingdom, and was proclaimed Bishop of Toulouse by Pope Boniface VIII in 1296.
