Viseu, Portugal

St. Mary Magdalene, seated at the centre of the composition, is depicted inside a cave, wearing a dark blue tunic and with long, loose, wavy hair. She appears barefoot, with her right arm resting on an open book. Placed on a rock in the lower right corner of the painting is a jar of ointment and a skull, the attributes that are normally associated with St. Mary Magdalene. In the background, the opening of the cave reveals a landscape dotted with trees and an overcast sky laden with grey and white clouds.
