Saint Mark (San Marcos)

Damià Formentc. 1530

Museo de Zaragoza

Museo de Zaragoza
Zaragoza, Spain

This sculpture is one of a pair. The other depicts Saint Luke. Both come from the Carmen Calzado Convent in Zaragoza. Both faces are natural-looking and the bodies are at an angle. They may have been made for the sides of an altarpiece to be seen head-on as the backs have not been sculpted. Some styling, like the hair chiseling and less voluminous beards, is different from Forment's 1520s production. This suggests that these sculptures are from a later date when his wider workshop may have been involved.
