Saint Mark the Evangelist

c. 1100

Chester Beatty

Chester Beatty
Dublin, Ireland

By the sixth century, many Gospel books were beginning to be decorated. Gradually a 'programme' evolved to include the depiction of the four Evangelists or their symbols, elaborate canon tables and decorated letters. The Evangelists were usually depicted seated, either at a desk or lectern, but occasionally they are shown standing, as in the traditional depiction of Old Testament prophets.
