  • Painter: Master of the Dormition of the Virgin from Murano
  • Description: This painting was originally the right side of a polyptych of which nothing else now remains. Saint Mark is identifiable both by the inscription and by his facial features: dark curly hair and beard; strong features; skin tones modeled by a light reminiscent of the light in Byzantine paintings, which highlights the saint’s rapt expression, following archaic models. This is a master who comes in the wake of Paolo Veneziano and also, later, Lorenzo Veneziano. In particular, this work seems to lie at an early stage in the career of the anonymous master, like the four panels with saints found in the Correr Museum in Venice.
