Description: The Florentine painter Bicci di Lorenzo was active painting panel paintings and frescos for more than half a century. The figures in his works are based on a traditional and conservative formula, which only partially makes use of stimuli from the major personalities of Florence of the period. This panel and its partner formed the side compartments of an altar complex or the side doors of a portable altar. The two saints have halos of different shapes and proportions, but their design motifs are similar. They can be situated in the artist’s early mature period, around the end of the 1420s, by which time his elongated and harsh figures became broader and more imposing.
