Saint Peter's

Miesch attempts to provide information to her audience that will help them question truths that are widely held and perpetuated by society. This piece depicts a photograph of a section of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City, with the following text overlaid on top; "On the fourth [s]sunday of advent, I stood up in Saint [r]Rita's and prayed aloud... This church has a small part of the mass specifically for prayer--silent or spoken. [i]I pray that the [v]Vatican recognizes the oppression within the church itself and allows women to be priests. The priest smiled at me, the rest of the church fell silent. I knew my father would say something to me after mass. We had arrived late and my family wasn't sitting together. After i spoke, my eldest sister whispered in my ear 'you're gonna hear about this for the rest of your life'. It turns out my father had been standing in the back of the church and he hadn't heard. No one told." This segment of text along with the imagery of nuns outside of St. Peter's basilica at the Vatican is intended to create questions about the role of women in the church and the taboo nature of questioning that restricted role.
