  • Description: Scholars connect this panel to the Madonna and Child with Christ Blessing in the pinnacle of an altarpiece held in the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the St. Paul from a private collection in New York. This altarpiece is attributed to the Master of the Dormition of Terni, leader of Umbrian production in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, which was open to stylistic influences from the areas around Orvieto and the Marche. According to recent studies, the altarpiece was made in the artist's mature period, datable to the 1390s. Saint Peter here has a new amplitude, but is devoid of the classical inclinations found in the earliest works of the Master. The swelling of the mouth and the curly beard of the saint could be compared to the works of Pietro di Puccio, who returned to Umbria in 1391 after his stay at Pisa.
