The scene portrayed here refers to the story told by Father Rivadeneira: "While engaged in her labour, which she undertook in order to support her parents, Our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to her on many occasions in the form of the Baby Jesus seated on a cushion." The canvas may be related to the painter's daughter joining the Convent of the Mother of God in Seville, in 1671, where she took vows under the name Sister Francisca María de Santa Rosa.
