This facility showcases the life history, character, and achievements of two enormously famous figures from Sakai: Sen no Rikyū, who saw great success with the tea ceremony, and poet Yosano Akiko, a leading figure who helped shape modern Japanese literature. In addition, the plaza serves as a spot where tourists can learn about the history and culture of Sakai, while also engaging in various hands-on experiences.The Sen no Rikyū Chanoyu (Tea Ceremony) Museum offers visitors an opportunity to experience the three schools of tea descended from tea master Sen no Rikyū: Omotesenke, Urasenke, and Mushakojisenke. Matcha and Japanese sweets may be enjoyed while sitting in chairs, and instructions for serving tea are given inside of a simulated tea house. Tours are also given inside the Sakai Tai-an, a reconstruction of the Tai-an teahouse designed by Sen no Rikyū that went on to receive designation as Japanese national treasure.Meanwhile, the Yosano Akiko Museum features a model of the Western-style home where the poet was born as the third daughter of a family who ran the Japanese confectionery Surugaya. Also on offer are images and recordings allowing visitors to experience the world of poetry, and an exhibition featuring the artistic process of bookbinding.The venue is also home to a tourist information space featuring spots of interest around Sakai.
