This is a flat shaped wine cup coated with vermillion lacquer. On the interior surface, turtles with seaweed tails and bamboo are depicted in taka maki-e (raised-gold powder decoration). The shell of the turtle on the left is made of kanagai (metal foil).
On the exterior, it bears an inscription, which reads ‘久孝 (Hisataka)’ with kao (stylized signature), inside the footring. Hisataka was a 19-century maki-e artist patronized by the Tokugawa shogunate. Hence this cup is considered to be a gift from the shogun family.
