From Philipp Franz von Siebold, 'Flora Japonica sive plantae quas in imperio Japonico collegit, descripsit, ex parte in ipsis locis pingendas curavit', Volume II (1870).

Known as 'Ginkgo biloba', the plant was at one time named after the English botanist Richard Anthony Salisbury (1761-1829).

Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866) was a German physician, botanist and traveler. He achieved prominence by his studies of Japanese flora and fauna and the introduction of Western medicine in Japan.
