The MNCN's herpetology collection includes one of the largest saltwater crocodile skulls ever found. The crocodile it belonged to was collected on the Philippine island of Mindoro in 1887, and gifted by Domingo Sánchez. It came from the Central Commission in Manila, and is registered in the log of objects entering and leaving the vertebrates and comparative anatomy section of the zoology collection (1868–1909). One reference to the object can be found in a publication by J. Gogorza from 1888 (Data for the Philippine Fauna of Vertebrates. Annals of the Spanish Society of Natural History. Madrid. Vol. 17: pp. 247–303).
