The award was presented in 1967 to Francesco Cassani, founder of SAME, by Minister of Industry, Trade and Crafts Giulio Andreotti. The "Mercurio d'Oro" was born in Italy in 1949 as a quality award for businesses to restore confidence and competitive spirit to the Italian manufacturing system and economy after World War II. The award recognises the skills and commitment of men, women and companies that help to shape a country's identity.
