A Sami camp by a fjord. A group of Sami are talking with three soldiers. The reindeer herd is behind the tent. Tall mountains and a waterfall in the background. Made after a drawing by L.J.B Sabatier.
The Sami people are a Finno-Ugric people inhabiting Sápmi, which today encompasses large parts of Norway and Sweden, northern parts of Finland, and the Murmansk Oblast of Russia. They divided into several different groups, Reindeer Sami, Sea Sami and Forest Sami.
The tent called a "lavvo" is a temporary dwelling that the Sami use during reindeer migrations and the turf hut called "gamme" is a more permanent dwelling, for when the group would stay for a longer period of time, like in the spring when the reindeer herd has arrived the coastal pasture area for the summer.
