The Ailanthus Silkmoth is the only other species of completely domesticated silkworm in its larval form, along with Bombyx mori. The silk of the Ailanthus Silkmoth is known as Eri silk (after the host plant Era or castor). The woolly white silk is very durable and even elastic, as well as having a structure which makes it warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It is often referred to as the fabric of peace, as it is made without killing the silkworm. For this reason, it is favoured by Buddhist monks and others who practise non-violence.
