Samjak norigae composed of an ax, a pair of Mandarin ducks,
and an eggplant in cloisonné silver. The ax was a symbol thought to
deter the plague. It is also counterbalanced by the eggplant, which in
combination symbolizes the birth of numerous male children. Often,
three axes are combined in a set for a norigae. This specific combination
represents the desire for the parent’s sons to reach the highest rank at
the imperial court, serving as one of the three ministers beside the king.
