The textile producers collated their products into sample books. These often very large and beautifully decorated books served to present, but also to document, the company's range. Textile samples could be purchased from competitors by subscription. They served as a sample and inspiration for their own production and were often included in sample books. To this day, textile companies have sample book archives, which textile designers consult to find inspiration for new designs.
