The NASA Project Echo put the first communication satellite into orbit. The large satellite balloon had a thin aluminum foil reflective skin that bounced microwave signals from one point on Earth to another. Experiments such as this helped NASA not only communicate, but also learn more about how large spacecraft would operate in the environment of space.
