Albrecht Dürer1497/1498

This print shows the Old Testament story of Samson, legendary for his strength, struggling with the lion which he would ultimately tear to pieces.

Durer revolutionised printmaking to turn it into a demonstration of artistic virtuosity. Here he uses dramatic gradations of shading to convey the lion's mane. He evokes Samson's stength and virility with the dynamic flow of his hair and gown.
