Samuel Moody (1733-1808): married Elizabeth Johnson (see Gainsborough DPG316) in 1779 and took as his second wife Mary Paterson (1767-1820) in 1786.
The companion pastel of Moody's second wife, Mary Paterson, was with Leggatt in 1915, when offered to Dulwich, and later with Knoedler. This portrait seems to date from c.1790, or perhaps on the occasion of his second marriage.
