A success story of the transfer of Pungmulgut onto the stage, Samulnori is a percussion ensemble consisting of kkwaenggwari, jing, janggu, and buk.
Since its emergence in 1978, it has been well received as the most representative form of Korean music both at home and abroad, having demonstrated the unique rhythmic patterns of Korean music. Initially, Samulnori was a pronoun for an ensemble made up of Kim Duk-soo, Kim Yong-bae, Lee Kwang-su, and Choi Jong-sil, but it became a common noun for a performing art as the new genre spawned several groups. The NGC’s own band was formed in 1984.
