In a vernacular house, a sandook would be placed in the private areas of the home. In the case of newly built houses, where it had been moved out of its originally intended use and context, the sandook was tucked into the space under the staircase which was a common area in the house. Such sandook were used to store objects used by the entire family and would not be locked.
