Santa Teresa

XVIII century

Catedral de Mallorca

Catedral de Mallorca
Palma, Spain

Saint Teresa, also known as Saint Teresa of Jesus or Saint Teresa of Ávila, was a mystic, achieving the deepest connection with God one can have in life. She founded the Order of Discalced Carmelites, based on poverty and spirituality. She also wrote several works of theological, mystical, and literary content.

The painting depicts the saint kneeling in the foreground with outstretched hands receiving the burning lance from the angel, who is positioned in the background. Cherubs appear above. It is a devotional composition typical of the Baroque aesthetic.
