On Thursday, Oct. 18, 1877, Charles and Sarah married at her parents’ house at 610 Jefferson St., near Division St. (now Juneau) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was 24, and it was a few weeks before her 24th birthday. They held a semi-private ceremony without attendants, though Edward and Ernest Allis, brothers of the groom, served as ushers. (“Local Miscellany,” Milwaukee Daily Sentinel, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Friday, October 19, 1877; pg. 8) Rev. Mr. Nichols of Immanuel Presbyterian Church officiated, and Rev. Thomas Watson, the brother of Mrs. E.P. Allis and the groom’s uncle, gave the couple a blessing. That evening Charles and Sarah headed East for a brief honeymoon.
