Sarcophagus with Dionysian Retinue

Baths of Diocletian

Baths of Diocletian
Roma, Italy

The sarcophagus shows the members of the ecstatic retinue accompanying Dyonisus: from the left, the god is standing on a chariot, embracing a satire; two centaurs, one of which holding a lira in his hands, two maenads playing a flute and a tambourine, a chariot on which Silenus is laying drunk. Finally there are Pan, dancing around a basket with a snake inside, and a satire turning back observing the whole scene. 4th century AD
