This is the image of the king Maharaja Shahji. Sarfoji belonged to the line of Maratha kings of Tanjore who ruled the region from 17th to the 19th century CE. In this sculpture, Sarfoji wears a long choga garment and a sash over his shoulders reaching his knees. He is also wearing a turban in the Maratha fashion. His hands are joined in anjali mudra, signifying devotion. The base or pedestal of this sculpture also has pegs which allow it to be transported during ritual processions.
