Sarod, a plucked string instrument, is about 150 years old. It has a body crafted from wood, steel, and leather. The instrument evolved from a Persian instrument called Rabab and an Afghan instrument, also called Rabab, both of which came to India with conquering armies. It emerged as a major classical instrument after its re-design in the late 19th century. Today, the Sarod ranks next only to the Sitar for its popularity amongst international audiences.
