The sarung batik sutera skrin fabric was produced by a batik maker from Kelantan. Motifs of flowers, leaves and small butterflies have been formed on the screen used to decorate this sarung fabric. This technique in producing the batik skrin was believed to have been brought into Kelantan from Thailand in the early 1900s. The batik skrin production refers to the technique of sketching patterns and colour application on a polyester screen stretched on a frame of a certain size. To produce different designs, several pieces of frames are required and the screen is placed on a white cloth where the colouring process is conducted several times to complete the pattern and colour of the batik fabric as desired.
In the past, Malay women wore batik sarung fabric matched with baju kurung Kedah while doing work in or outside the home. When leaving the house, the batik sarung fabric was used as a kelubung or head covering to protect themselves from the heat of the sun. Batik fabric was also worn by men on the East Coast, where it was tied at the waist or wrapped around the head as a semutar during farming or fishing.
This batik skrin fabric was also widely used as a daily product such as hats, bags, women's accessories and so on. Today, batik designers incorporates batik skrin fabric as the main material in producing home decoration products and accessories such as tablecloths, cushions, wall hangings and more.
