The Sarung Batik Tulis fabric was produced by a student who studied at the Institut Kraf Negara in Rawang, Selangor around the 2000s. The use of motifs and designs of pua and geometric patterns as the main motifs in the design of this sarung makes the fabric more attractive.
The fabric produced is very fine due to its production process which uses canting technique with ‘ss’ size. Batik tulis or batik lukis are hand-drawn freely and most are of floral and nature-based patterns. Batik tulis has its own special features, that is, each pattern drawn is only produced once and is different from other batik lukis patterns even if it is produced by the same painter.
Based on the Malay Annals originally titled Sulalatus Salatin, Hang Nadim was commanded by Sultan Mahmud to buy serasah fabric or batik tulis with patterns of forty types of flowers on each piece.
Canting tools filled with hot wax are used to draw batik patterns on white cloth. Once the sketching work is completed, the colouring process of the pattern design will be done using a paint brush, where the affected part of the wax will not leave a colour effect when the colour off process is done. The wax will melt and come off on its own making these parts remain white as a separator. Batik Tulis is suitable to be styled in any fashion and it is able to attract ladies who enjoy local products.
