Sarung Tenun Bergerus Fabric

The sarung tenun bergerus (calendered) fabric was finely weaved by a skilled weaver from Pahang in 1989 where gold thread supplements the pakan thread used to weave the gigi belalang motif onto strip patterns that adorned the traditional woven fabric.

The fabric was calendered by the notable Gerus Master Craftsman, Sheikh Omar bin Sheikh Ibrahim who often calenders fabric for the Pahang royal family.

In the past, the fabrics that have been weaved were delivered to the gerus craftsman for a calendering process. The calendering technique is one of the traditional ways to smooth, bind and compress the woven threads on the surface of the fabric. Normally prior to the calendering process, the fabric will be washed and rinsed with the clean water of lerak fruit and starched. The wax applied on the dry starchy woven fabric would then be rubbed with a sea shell called a cowrie until the surface of the fabric is smooth and shiny.

Long ago, the calendered fabric was worn when attending traditional and customary functions at the palace, wedding ceremonies or other official events.
