Composed of a satin panel fixed into an octagonal frame and a wooden handle, both frame and handle coated with black lacquer and adorned with gold-tracing design, this fan is an exquisite piece of art with an eye-catching color palette, well-designed composition and meticulous painting details, showing a perfect integration of various techniques including lacquerware-making, painting, embroidery, applique embroidery in particular.
The satin panel is adorned with figures and landscapes on both front and back. Standing among embroidered rockeries, trees and flowers, the figures, with faces made of applique ivory slices and attire of fabric and paper appliques, look life-like with vivid complexion and manners. The black-lacquer handle features a central opening in the shape of a crabapple blossom, above and below which scatter painted plants and figures.
