This Satsuma cut glass ewer was probably used to serve chilled saké. It is quite different from the indigo-blue blown glass ewer also in this exhibition. While the blown glass example, with its flowing lines, is refreshingly simple and dignified, this cut-glass ewer, with the same rounded motifs on its sides and lid, makes effective use of regularity and color contrast. The bluish purple of the glass applied to the body adds a lighter touch.
